Turner Sims commissions new work with sponsorship from the PRS.

Last week I photographed the launch event for the sponsorship of the innovative English jazz pianist Peter Edwards as part of the new funding initiative by the Performing Rights Society entitled ‘The New Music Biennial 2017’ which will commission musicians from various genres.

Turner Sims Concert Hall in Southampton “has commissioned pianist, composer and bandleader Peter Edwards to create A Journey with the Giants of Jazz for their submission, in which he explores the year 1917. A period that saw the births of some of the most influential jazz artists including composer ‘Tadd’ Dameron, singer Ella Fitzgerald, trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, pianist Thelonious Monk, drummer Buddy Rich and percussionist Mongo Santamaria, Peter will take inspiration from the motifs found in six of these artists’ classic works. The piece, to be performed by the Nu Civilisation Orchestra (a Tomorrow’s Warriors ensemble), deconstructs their themes to offer the audience a re-imagined and alternative musical experience.”

Peter is a regular at the Turner Sims in various groupings, and I have photographed him on a number of occasions. I was pleased to be able to be there for the local launch of this initiative, and to have my photographs available for the press release. Here is Peter playing, and at the release event:

About Gerry Walden

I am a stock photographer with far more years of experience than I would care to mention. Located in Southampton (UK) I am sandwiched between two national parks and my home town is a major seaport. I shoot mostly people related images, and travel when I can. I am resident photographer at a major concert venue in the town which means I get to shoot a variety of musicians.
